We missed the bus.
After setting a number of alarms and quadruple checking the time of the pick-up, we picked up some breakfast rice (very leisurely) and sauntered to the meeting point in order to hitch our ride, only to discover that it had left half an hour ago. After some initial panicking and rice flinging (mainly from Ellen) we decided to negotiate with a tuktuk driver to take us all the way to the elephant sanctuary (1000 BHT). Being slightly less of a headless chicken than us girlies, he offered to contact the company, and they came back for us, so all was well and we arrived in true style – with our legs hanging out of a pick up truck
The elephants were amazing, if a little mischievous, and often wanted to veer off into the undergrowth, which actually made the whole experience more fun!
After that we took a relaxing jaunt to the waterfall (3hrs) – which was effortless for us, of course, and on the way entertained the other ferangs by re-enacting the log scene from Dirty Dancing! The trek ended at the most idyllic waterfall which we unfortunately don’t have any pictures of as we got a bit too excited, and the water was so strong that we mainly had to concentrate on holding on to our bathers (our friends Billy and Joe who went the following day were more than happy to inform us that a group of Aussie girls had their bikinis whipped clean off).
White water rafting was a little too tame for us daredevils, however, we managed to liven things up by capsizing a rather arrogant American lad (for which we feel only pride!)
Arriving home later on, we managed to catch the tennis in a ‘Thai saloon bar’ which was very entertaining and almost compensated for the fact that Murray lost (boohoo)
More in a few xx
Hi Ellen. Glad it’s going well – the photos take me back – look like some of mine! If you’re going to Chang Rai, check out McDonald’s!! It’s ridiculous to find one in a place like that, in a country with the best food in the world! Enjoy every minute – especially the food. Love from the MacRaes xxxxx
It’s becoming a bit of a nightly treat to log on and read your latest exploits. Bet the other passengers loved having to turn around and come back for you!
Nick Nuttall is carrrying the Olympic torch in Southampton next week. Sarah is so proud! Its because UNEP advised the olympic organising team on sustainability and other things. So glad you saw the tennis – did you cry with Andy Murray at the end? Dad and I were in floods. Love you xxxxx
